Algorithmic Rules:

1 : Draw a circle of “x” diameter

2 : Draw a line from the centroid of your
circle to any point along the circle to
find your true tangent point.

3 : Draw an arc at your true tangent point
with a diameter of 2(x) = y

4 : Draw a line from the centroid of “x”
though the centroid of 2(x) of length 2(y)

5 : At end of line draw a circle using the end
point as your centroid that is 1/2 (x)

6 : Using endpoints of “y” as your centroid draw
new circles that are of diameter 2(x)

7 : For all new circles repeat steps 2 – 6

Agenda:

• 4:40-7 pm Pin-up in Tall Hall starting on the south east corner.  Any order.  Please space yourselves by 1′ of distance and pin-up at the same level (eye level).  Please pin up both your drawing (left side) from last week and have your model set up (right side).  Please be ready to briefly describe your algorithmic model and rule set.

1. Project 2

Agenda:

• Everyone please be pinned up by 4:30 sharp in the Tall Hall area in the School of Architecture.  The first person should pin-up on the east end of the south wall and everyone else should follow in order.  Please take care to pinup so that the height of your boards matches your neighbor’s and that there is equal spacing between you and your neighbor.  Also place models on stands, make sure the room is clear of any extra trash or objects, and adjust the lighting to showcase your project in the best possible way.  Presenting the work in a well crafted and thoughtful way and having everything pinned-up on time is a crucial part of professional practice, and some would argue one of the most important parts of the design process.  So take it very seriously, pin-up with high craft, and be on time.
• Please start your presentation by stating your concept in a sentence or two at the most; then describe your project and your parametric model.  The presentation should only be 10 minutes.

• You will all need to begin fabricating your projects either by 3d printing or laser cutting.

3D Printing Resources:

The school has 2 machines available for 3D printing.  The school’s machines may not be open over spring break. The FDM machine uses ABS plastic and you can print elements as thn as 1/16″.  The Z-Corp 3D Printer uses powdered starch and can print elements only as thin as 1/8″ – Any thinner and it will most likely break.  If you do not know how to prep a file for 3D printing watch the following tutorial: 3D Printing Video Tutorial

Another resource for 3D printing is Red Eye Architectural Models.  They offer a quick an easy online instant quote process.  You can upload your file; get a quote; pay for the model and shipping; and they will ship the model to you from Minnesota.  Their pricing is competitive with the school, but you need to give them at least 2 days to print the job and a couple more days for shipping (please read over their policies foran exact description of the lead time needed).

Laser Cutting:

The school’s laser cutters may not be open over break.
